Sharing an Emotional But Fleeting Moment

I want to share this personal photo with you.

It is of me and my husband Gene during an emotional moment in his room at the Memory Care Unit at Country Meadows Senior Living home in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

I will never forget that heartbreaking moment, when Gene grabbed me tightly, unable to speak due to his deterioration, but crying out loud like a little boy who needs his mom after a hard fall flat on his face.

I also will never forget that very next moment, before I could even wipe away the tears streaming down my face, Gene stood up and left me behind, dragging his feet as he limped towards the dining room entrance, using his body-language to indicate "Food!" I hopelessly followed him with blurry eyes. I couldn't get over how concentrated Gene was in that moment on getting to dinner, without any trace of sorrow in his mind or eyes.

It was such a bittersweet realization for me, learning that patients with his Alzheimer's condition over very much only live in the moment. That means their pain does not follow them all the time - and yet those moments are the most that they can live for.

Serenity tip to self: Don't be overwhelmingly distressed because Gene undoubtedly has much less pain than I do. Let go of your tears!
