THE TUTU PROJECT

When Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer, Bob traveled the world taking pictures of himself in a pink tutu - just so she could laugh during chemo.

"The Tutu Project™ began in 2003 as a lark. I mean, really, think of it. Me photographing myself in a pink tutu, how crazy is that? But ten years ago my wife, Linda, and I moved to the East Coast and, as odd as it may sound it, the self-portraits proved to be a perfect way of expressing myself. Why? Because even though the move was exciting, exhilarating, and inspiring, it was 180 degrees from what I knew. So I took the old, mixed it in with the new, and kept the tutu handy. Six months after the move, Linda, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She beat it, only to have it recur in 2006. During these past nine years, I’ve been in awe of her power, her beauty, and her spirit. Oddly enough, her cancer has taught us that life is good, dealing with it can be hard, and sometimes the very best thing—no, the only thing—we can do to face another day is to laugh at ourselves, and share a laugh with others."

Laughter really can be the best medicine, especially when it's because of love.

HAPPINESS REVEALED

Some legacies we leave. Other legacies are gifted to us, "and the only appropriate response is gratefulness."

"Beauty and seduction is nature's tool for survival, because we protect what we fall in love with."

Nature's beauty can be easily missed — but not through Louie Schwartzberg's lens. His stunning time-lapse photography, accompanied by powerful words from Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast (starts at 3:25), serves as a meditation on being grateful for every day. (Filmed at TEDxSF.)

Louie Schwartzberg is an award-winning cinematographer, director and producer who captures breathtaking images that celebrate life — revealing connections, universal rhythms, patterns and beauty.

Louie's notable career spans feature films, television shows, commercials and documentaries. He won two Clio Awards for TV advertising, including best environmental broadcast spot, an Emmy nomination for best cinematography and the Heartland Film Festival's Truly Moving Picture Award for the feature film "America's Heart & Soul." Schwartzberg founded Moving Art to use the power of media to inspire and entertain through television programming, DVD products, and full-length motion picture and IMAX films. His new film "Wings of Life" will be released by Disneynature.

NEW BEGINNINGS
Performers: Maria Kowroski and Ask la Cour
Choreography: Christopher Wheeldon's "After the Rain"
Music: "Spiegel Im Spiegel" by Arvo Part

This dance is performed on the 57th-floor terrace of Four World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. It is actually an advertisement that was released at sunrise on 9/12, by the New York City Ballet.

“Our hope is that 9/12 can now be rebranded as a day of optimism and new beginnings,” says Matt Eastwood, chief creative officer of DDB NYC, the Ballet's ad agency.

What a simple and beautiful thought. Because sometimes new legacies are born out of old ones.

THE POWER OF VULNERABILITY

Influential author and speaker Dr. Brene Brown tackles the myth that vulnerability is a weakness. The legacy she is building is her argument that the vulnerability is actually the clearest path to courage and meaningful connection, and has the power to transform the way we engage and educate.

MILLY AND THE MOON

Cast: Milly Xu
Voiceover: Jenny Bai

"In 1967, the Chinese Cultural Revolution sealed my fate. In order tosave my parents the grief of losing their only son, I volunteered to take the place of my brother as one of the thousands of teens ordered by Chairman Mao to spend the rest of our lives as peasants in the countryside. After eight years of torture and hard-labor, standing knee-deep in the rice fields every day had filled my joints and muscles with rheumatism. I found myself straddling the thin line between life and death. And when I was sent away in a cart, pulled by a donkey, barely conscious, I chose life, and somehow made it back to Shanghai."

DIANE PROUD: A TRIBUTE
Micro-documentary
Cast: Diane Proud, Robert Proud, James Owens, Josh Cuellas

Written on our blog on 9/21/2011

Just a few months ago, we were sitting with Diane Proud in one of the empty rooms at Cooper Fitness Center in Dallas, filming her interview and admiring her energetic spirit. By then, Diane had already lost her ability to speak, and was using an iPhone app, her son James had discovered, to communicate with us. We spent the afternoon doubled over in laughter from her hilarious commentary and constant bouts of wit. And our lives were changed.

We stayed in touch with Diane after that, through e-mail, visits, phone calls - and for a while, she seemed strong enough to beat the disease. Although we had heard how ALS claims its victims, we felt confident Diane would be okay. She had a fiesty spirit and a strong will, and nothing was going to stop her from squeezing every drop out of life.

But the e-mails eventually stopped. Invitations were turned down. And the only thing we heard week after week was that "Diane needs to conserve her energy," "Diane is too tired," "Diane needs to take a raincheck." And then we saw her at Run Proud for Dessert, with big hugs and a bright smile, handing out cupcakes to runners. And then she was gone.

When we heard the news, our hearts dropped to the bottom of our stomachs, and we felt lost. At Live Wright, we always strive to discover the glimmers of light that turn dark moments into reflective ones. But when Diane passed, we were left wondering what happens when darkness really does take over, and the peals of laughter that came so easily before are drowned out by tears. How do we pay it forward when a woman, who lived by the strength of her mind and body, is left with nothing to reflect on?

Then we remembered Diane's powerful words. They still ring in our ears: "This disease SUCKS. So, let's find a CURE. And if we can't do that, I want my story to be passed on to help raise awareness for ALS."

So that's exactly what we are doing. We realized that Diane is the glimmer in the darkness of ALS, and her request to preserve her own legacy has brought us hope. She figured out, before any of us, how to battle the bad - by remembering, cherishing and spreading the good.

Diane is a hero.

She may not have lived to see a cure in her lifetime, but she was a shining example of what it means to have a life worth living. The influence of her unyielding spirit is palpable, and her love has moved us to spend every day appreciating what we have, striving to pay it forward the best we can.
